ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Delay time to hospital arrival may be influenced by lack of recognition of stroke signs and the necessity to seek emergency medical, which in turn is influenced by language barriers to, a modifiable risk factor, stroke awareness education. The objective was to determine the comprehension and satisfaction of a Spanish stroke awareness acronym, RÁPIDO, among community-living, Hispanic and Latino, Spanish-reading adults. METHODS: A 33-item survey was completed by 166 adults. Data on sociodemographics, language preferences, stroke education, and comprehension and satisfaction with RÁPIDO were collected. Descriptive characteristics were calculated. Fisher exact tests were performed to determine whether reading language (group 1, only or predominantly reads in Spanish; group 2, reads in Spanish and English equally or reads predominately in English) influenced survey responses. Responses to open-ended questions were categorized. RESULTS: Sixty-nine percent of the participants were born outside of the United States, 82% currently resided in the United States, 34% read only or predominately in Spanish, and 7% had a stroke. Most participants thought RÁPIDO was informative, eye-catching, and easily remembered. Significant differences were found between reading language preference groups for correctly identifying RÁPIDO images for facial drooping (group 1, 80%; group 2, 95%; P ≤ .001) and dizziness/loss of balance (group 1, 54%; group 2, 73%; P = .027). Eighty percent or more of all participants were able to correctly interpret RÁPIDO images for facial drooping, blurry vision, impaired speech, and call emergency services. Adding "911" to the RÁPIDO image of the clock was a common suggestion. CONCLUSIONS: RÁPIDO was well received among the participants. Modifications to RÁPIDO images representing dizziness/loss of balance and arm weakness, and the addition of "911" may improve its usefulness. Obtaining more extensive feedback across the United States and testing the effect of RÁPIDO on increasing knowledge of stroke signs and retention of that knowledge are necessary next steps.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the world's principal metabolic diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. The gut incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), which has been proposed as a new treatment for T2DM, are extensively metabolized by Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4). Inhibitors of DPP-4 block the degradation of GLP-1 and GIP and may increase their natural circulating levels, favoring glycemic control in T2DM. A novel and potent selective inhibitor of DPP-4 with an 8-purine derived structure (1) has been developed and tested in vitro and in vivo in Zücker obese diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats, an experimental model of the metabolic syndrome and T2DM to assess the inhibitory activity using vildagliptin as reference standard. ZDF rats were subdivided into three groups (n = 7/group), control (C-ZDF), and those treated with compound 1 (Compound1-ZDF) and with vildagliptin (V-ZDF), both at 10 mg/kg/d rat body weight, in their drinking water for 12 weeks, and a group of lean littermates (ZL) was used. ZDF rats developed DM (fasting hyperglycemia, 425 ± 14.8 mg/dL; chronic hyperglycemia, HbA1c 8.5 ± 0.4%), compared to ZL rats. Compound 1 and vildagliptin reduced sustained HbAl1c (14% and 10.6%, P < 0.05, respectively) and fasting hyperglycemia values (24% and 19%, P < 0.05, respectively) compared to C-ZDF group (P < 0.001). Compound 1 and vildagliptin have shown a potent activity with an IC50 value of 4.92 and 3.21 µM, respectively. These data demonstrate that oral compound 1 administration improves diabetes in ZDF rats by the inhibitory effect on DPP-4, and the potential to be a novel, efficient and tolerable approach for treating diabetes of obesity-related T2DM, in ZDF rats.

The present study evaluated the performance of the fungus Trichoderma reesei to tolerate and biodegrade the herbicide diuron in its agrochemical presentation in agar plates, liquid culture, and solid-state fermentation. The tolerance of T. reesei to diuron was characterized through a non-competitive inhibition model of the fungal radial growth on the PDA agar plate and growth in liquid culture with glucose and ammonium nitrate, showing a higher tolerance to diuron on the PDA agar plate (inhibition constant 98.63 mg L-1) than in liquid culture (inhibition constant 39.4 mg L-1). Diuron biodegradation by T. reesei was characterized through model inhibition by the substrate on agar plate and liquid culture. In liquid culture, the fungus biotransformed diuron into 3,4-dichloroaniline using the amide group from the diuron structure as a carbon and nitrogen source, yielding 0.154 mg of biomass per mg of diuron. A mixture of barley straw and agrolite was used as the support and substrate for solid-state fermentation. The diuron removal percentage in solid-state fermentation was fitted by non-multiple linear regression to a parabolic surface response model and reached the higher removal (97.26%) with a specific aeration rate of 1.0 vkgm and inoculum of 2.6 × 108 spores g-1. The diuron removal in solid-state fermentation by sorption on barley straw and agrolite was discarded compared to the removal magnitude of the biosorption and biodegradation mechanisms of Trichoderma reesei. The findings in this work about the tolerance and capability of Trichoderma reesei to remove diuron in liquid and solid culture media demonstrate the potential of the fungus to be implemented in bioremediation technologies of herbicide-polluted sites.

RESUMO

Rodent middens provide a fine-scale spatiotemporal record of plant and animal communities over the late Quaternary. In the Americas, middens have offered insight into biotic responses to past environmental changes and historical factors influencing the distribution and diversity of species. However, few studies have used middens to investigate genetic or ecosystem level responses. Integrating midden studies with neoecology and experimental evolution can help address these gaps and test mechanisms underlying eco-evolutionary patterns across biological and spatiotemporal scales. Fully realizing the potential of middens to answer cross-cutting ecological and evolutionary questions and inform conservation goals in the Anthropocene will require a collaborative research community to exploit existing midden archives and mount new campaigns to leverage midden records globally.

Background: partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) is generally known to influence outcome in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) at normal altitudes. Less is known about specific relationships of PaCO2 levels and clinical outcomes at high altitudes. Methods: This is a prospective single-center cohort of consecutive TBI patients admitted to a trauma center located at 2600 meter above sea level. An unfavorable outcome was defined as the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOSE) < 4 at 6-month follow-up. Results: 81 patients with complete data, 80% (65/81) were men, and median (IQR) age was 36 (25-50) years). Median Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) on admission was 9 (6-14), 49% (40/81) were severe (GCS: 3-8), 32% (26/81) moderate (GCS 12 - 9), and 18% (15/81) mild (GCS 13-15) TBI. The median (IQR) Abbreviated Injury Score of the Head (AISh) was 3 (2-4). Frequency of an unfavorable outcome (GOSE < 4) was 30% (25/81), median GOSE was 4 (2-5), and 6-month mortality was 24% (20/81). Comparison between patients with favorable and unfavorable outcomes revealed that those with unfavorable outcome were older, median [49 (30-72) vs. 29 (22-41), P < 0.01], had lower admission GCS [6 (4-8) vs. 13 (8-15), P < 0.01], higher AIS head [4 (4-4) vs. 3(2-4), p < 0.01], higher APACHE II score [17(15-23) vs 10 (6-14), < 0.01), higher Charlson score [0(0-2) vs. 0 (0-0), P < 0.01] and higher PaCO2 (mmHg), mean ± SD, 39 ± 9 vs. 32 ± 6, P < 0.01. In a multivariate analysis, age (OR 1.14 95% CI 1.1-1.30, P < 0.01), AISh (OR 4.7 95% CI 1.55-21.0, P < 0.05), and PaCO2 (OR 1.23 95% CI: 1.10-1.53, P < 0.05) were significantly associated with the unfavorable outcomes. When applying the same analysis to the subgroup on mechanical ventilation, AISh (OR 5.4 95% CI: 1.61-28.5, P = 0.017) and PaCO2 (OR 1.36 95% CI: 1.13-1.78, P = 0.015) remained significantly associated with the unfavorable outcome. Conclusion: Higher PaCO2 levels are associated with an unfavorable outcome in ventilated TBI patients. These results underscore the importance of PaCO2 level in TBI patients and whether it should be adjusted for populations living at higher altitudes.

Chemoreception through odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) represents the functions of key proteins in the chemical ecology of insects. Recent studies have identified chemoreceptors in coleopterans, facilitating the evolutionary analysis of not only ORs but also IRs and GRs. Thus, Cerambycidae, Tenebrionidae and Curculionidae have received increased attention. However, knowledge of the chemoreceptors from Scarabaeidae is still limited, particularly for those that are sympatric. Considering the roles of chemoreceptors, this analysis could shed light on evolutionary processes in the context of sympatry. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify and compare the repertoires of ORs, GRs and IRs between two sympatric scarab beetles, Hylamorpha elegans and Brachysternus prasinus. Here, construction of the antennal transcriptomes of both scarab beetle species and analyses of their phylogeny, molecular evolution and relative expression were performed. Thus, 119 new candidate chemoreceptors were identified for the first time, including 17 transcripts for B. prasinus (1 GR, 3 IRs and 13 ORs) and 102 for H. elegans (22 GRs, 14 IRs and 66 ORs). Orthologs between the two scarab beetle species were found, revealing specific expansions as well as absence in some clades. Purifying selection appears to have occurred on H. elegans and B. prasinus ORs. Further efforts will be focused on target identification to characterize kairomone and/or pheromone receptors.

BACKGROUND: Facultative bacterial endosymbionts have the potential to influence the interactions between aphids, their natural enemies, and host plants. Among the facultative symbionts found in populations of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae in central Chile, the bacterium Regiella insecticola is the most prevalent. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether infected and cured aphid lineages exhibit differential responses to wheat cultivars containing varying levels of the benzoxazinoid DIMBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one), which is a xenobiotic compound produced by plants. Specifically, we examined the reproductive performance responses of the most frequently encountered genotypes of Sitobion avenae when reared on wheat seedlings expressing low, medium, and high concentrations of DIMBOA. RESULTS: Our findings reveal that the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm ) in cured lineages of Sitobion avenae genotypes exhibits a biphasic pattern, characterized by the lowest rm and an extended time to first reproduction on wheat seedlings with medium levels of DIMBOA. In contrast, the aphid genotypes harbouring Regiella insecticola display idiosyncratic responses, with the two most prevalent genotypes demonstrating improved performance on seedlings featuring an intermediate content of DIMBOA compared to their cured counterparts. CONCLUSION: This study represents the first investigation into the mediating impact of facultative endosymbionts on aphid performance in plants exhibiting varying DIMBOA contents. These findings present exciting prospects for identifying novel targets for aphid control by manipulating the presence of aphid symbionts. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Hosts rely on the availability of nutrients for growth, and for defense against pathogens. At the same time, changes in host nutrition can alter the dynamics of pathogens that rely on their host for reproduction. For primary producer hosts, enhanced nutrient loads may increase host biomass or pathogen reproduction, promoting faster density-dependent pathogen transmission. However, the effect of elevated nutrients may be reduced if hosts allocate a growth-limiting nutrient to pathogen defense. In canonical disease models, transmission is not a function of nutrient availability. Yet, including nutrient availability is necessary to mechanistically understand the response of infection to changes in the environment. Here, we explore the implications of nutrient-mediated pathogen infectivity and host immunity on infection outcomes. We developed a stoichiometric disease model that explicitly integrates the contrasting dependencies of pathogen infectivity and host immunity on nitrogen (N) and parameterized it for an algal-host system. Our findings reveal dynamic shifts in host biomass build-up, pathogen prevalence, and the force of infection along N supply gradients with N-mediated host infectivity and immunity, compared with a model in which the transmission rate was fixed. We show contrasting responses in pathogen performance with increasing N supply between N-mediated infectivity and N-mediated immunity, revealing an optimum for pathogen transmission at intermediate N supply. This was caused by N limitation of the pathogen at a low N supply and by pathogen suppression via enhanced host immunity at a high N supply. By integrating both nutrient-mediated pathogen infectivity and host immunity into a stoichiometric model, we provide a theoretical framework that is a first step in reconciling the contrasting role nutrients can have on host-pathogen dynamics.

Fundamentos: la importancia que tiene la lactancia materna en la salud y calidad de vida de los individuos hace necesario que las políticas establecidas para su promoción sean operadas mediante la participación y articulación de instituciones y a través de redes interinstitucionales. Métodos: para la compilación de la información se hizo una revisión integrativa de literatura, cuyo propósito fue ampliar la comprensión de un tema a partir de la recopilación, sistematización y análisis de producciones científicas. Resultados: se seleccionaron 14 artículos publicados entre 2013 y 2020 y, en su mayoría, escritos en inglés, provenientes de países como Estados Unidos, Alemania, Reino Unido y Samoa. Los temas más recurrentes fueron el análisis de políticas públicas, la coordinación de programas y la percepción del funcionamiento de las estrategias de promoción, protección y apoyo a la lactancia materna. En conclusión: las relaciones intra e interinstitucionales son claves a la hora de implementar políticas de promoción de la lactancia materna. Sin embargo, para su puesta en marcha, se requiere financiación y articulación en los niveles operativos de sistemas de salud. En definitiva, las labores de articulación, seguimiento y evaluación requieren relaciones fortalecidas que fomenten, protejan, promuevan y apoyen la práctica de la lactancia materna. (AU)


Background: the importance of breastfeeding in the health and quality of life of individuals makes it necessary for the policies established for its promotion to be implemented through the participation and coordination of institutions and through inter-institutional networks. Methods: for the compilation of the information, an integrative literature review was carried out, the purpose of which was to broaden the understanding of a topic through the collection, systematization and analysis of scientific productions. Results: 14 articles published between 2013 and 2020 and mostly written in English were selected from countries such as the United States, Germany, United Kingdom and Samoa. The most recurrent themes were the analysis of public policies, program coordination and perceptions of the functioning of breastfeeding promotion, protection and support strategies. Conclusions: Intra- and inter-institutional relationships are key to the implementation of breastfeeding promotion policies. However, their implementation requires funding and coordination at the operational levels of health systems. In short the articulation, monitoring and evaluation require strengthened relationships that encourage, protect, promote and support the practice of breastfeeding. (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) have high mortality rates during the acute infection and up to ten years thereafter. Recommendations from international CAP guidelines include macrolide-based treatment. However, there is no data on the long-term outcomes of this recommendation. Therefore, we aimed to determine the impact of macrolide-based therapy on long-term mortality in this population. METHODS: Registered patients in the MIMIC-IV database 16 years or older and admitted to the ICU due to CAP were included. Multivariate analysis, targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) to simulate a randomised controlled trial, and survival analyses were conducted to test the effect of macrolide-based treatment on mortality six-month (6 m) and twelve-month (12 m) after hospital admission. A sensitivity analysis was performed excluding patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa or MRSA pneumonia to control for Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia (HCAP). RESULTS: 3775 patients were included, and 1154 were treated with a macrolide-based treatment. The non-macrolide-based group had worse long-term clinical outcomes, represented by 6 m [31.5 (363/1154) vs 39.5 (1035/2621), p < 0.001] and 12 m mortality [39.0 (450/1154) vs 45.7 (1198/2621), p < 0.001]. The main risk factors associated with long-term mortality were Charlson comorbidity index, SAPS II, septic shock, and respiratory failure. Macrolide-based treatment reduced the risk of dying at 6 m [HR (95% CI) 0.69 (0.60, 0.78), p < 0.001] and 12 m [0.72 (0.64, 0.81), p < 0.001]. After TMLE, the protective effect continued with an additive effect estimate of - 0.069. CONCLUSION: Macrolide-based treatment reduced the hazard risk of long-term mortality by almost one-third. This effect remains after simulating an RCT with TMLE and the sensitivity analysis for the HCAP classification.

Recent studies have documented global declines in insects and their relatives, but the exact mechanisms explaining these patterns are not fully understood. A potential driver underlying arthropod population declines is increases in anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Here, we synthesize the effects of N, P, and combined N + P enrichment on the abundance of hexapods (insects and collembola) and arachnids from 901 experiments reported in 84 studies. We found that N and combined N + P enrichment caused significant decreases in the abundance of these groups overall. While arthropod responses to nutrient enrichment across aquatic and terrestrial habitats and in temperate as well as tropical climatic zones differed in magnitude, our results suggest that arthropods are decreasing similarly in response to nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment. Further, despite previously shown differences in the nutrient demands of different insect metamorphosis groups, we found consistent negative effects of N + P enrichment on all groups. Our results also showed that the negative effects of nutrient additions are stronger for aquatic insects that are considered more sensitive to changes in physical-chemical parameters in their environments, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT), compared with other aquatic insects. In addition, N + P enrichment reduced the abundance of above-ground and below-ground arthropods, suggesting that a similar mechanism driving arthropod community change is acting on both groups. These findings suggest that changes in elemental cycles are a potential cause of the ongoing global decline of arthropods and underscore the serious effects of nutrient enrichment on ecological systems.

Two-pore channels (TPCs) are members of the superfamily of ligand-gated and voltage-sensitive ion channels in the membranes of intracellular organelles of eukaryotic cells. The evolution of ordinary plant TPC1 essentially followed a very conservative pattern, with no changes in the characteristic structural footprints of these channels, such as the cytosolic and luminal regions involved in Ca2+ sensing. In contrast, the genomes of mosses and liverworts encode also TPC1-like channels with larger variations at these sites (TPC1b channels). In the genome of the model plant Physcomitrium patens we identified nine non-redundant sequences belonging to the TPC1 channel family, two ordinary TPC1-type, and seven TPC1b-type channels. The latter show variations in critical amino acids in their EF-hands essential for Ca2+ sensing. To investigate the impact of these differences between TPC1 and TPC1b channels, we generated structural models of the EF-hands of PpTPC1 and PpTPC1b channels. These models were used in molecular dynamics simulations to determine the frequency with which calcium ions were present in a coordination site and also to estimate the average distance of the ions from the center of this site. Our analyses indicate that the EF-hand domains of PpTPC1b-type channels have a lower capacity to coordinate calcium ions compared with those of common TPC1-like channels.

The ecological niche is a fundamental concept to understand species' coexistence in natural communities. The recently developed framework of the multidimensional stoichiometric niche (MSN) characterizes species' niches using chemical elements in living organisms. Despite the fact that living organisms are composed of multiple elements, stoichiometric studies have so far mostly focused on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), and therefore a quantitative analysis of the dimensionality of the MSN in living organisms is still lacking, particularly for animals. Here we quantified 10 elements composing the biomass of nine soil animal taxa (958 individuals) from three trophic groups. We found that all 10 elements exhibited large variation among taxa, which was partially explained by their phylogeny. Overlaps of MSNs among the nine soil animal taxa were relatively smaller based on 10 elements, compared with those based on only C, N, and P. Discriminant analysis using all 10 elements successfully differentiated among the nine taxa (accuracy: 90%), whereas that using only C, N, and P resulted in a lower accuracy (60%). Our findings provide new evidence for MSN differentiation in soil fauna and demonstrate the high dimensionality of organismal stoichiometric niches beyond C, N, and P.

Host plant recognition are highly dependent on chemosensory perception, which involves chemosensory proteins (CSPs) that bind key chemical compounds the host plants. In this work, we hypothesize that two closely related aphid taxa, which differ in diet breadth, also differ in their CSPs. We detected a non-synonymous difference (lysine for asparagine) between M. persicae sensu stricto (Mpp) and the subspecies M. p. nicotianae (Mpn) in the sequence of a CSP (CSP5). We modeled in silico the binding capacity of both CSP5s variants with 163 different potential ligands from their host plants (120 unique from tobacco, 29 unique from peach, and 14 common ligands). After docking analysis with all ligands, we selected the three best ligands for each variant to perform molecular dynamics (tobacco: 2-cyclopentene-1,4-dione, salicylaldehyde, and benzoic acid; peach: phenol, valeric acid, and benzonitrile). The binding energy of the MpnCSP5 model to the studied ligands was, in all cases, lower than with the MppCSP5 model. The ligands from the host plants showed more stable binding with MpnCSP5 than with MppCSP5. This result suggests that the set of CSPs studied among M. persicae s. str. and M. p. nicotianae are very similar, but focusing on the CSP5 protein, we found a single key mutation that increases affinities for host compounds for M. p. nicotianae, which might have contributed to the specialization to tobacco. This study provides new insights into an evolutionary trend toward specificity in a binding protein.

The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae, is a cosmopolitan pest that feeds on cereals, provoking substantial yield losses by injuring plant tissue and by vectoring plant viruses. Here we report a highly complete, de novo draft genome of the grain aphid using long-read sequencing. We generated an assembly of 2740 contigs with a N50 of 450 kb. We compared this draft genome with that of other aphid species, inspecting gene family evolution, genome-wide positive selection, and searched for horizontal gene transfer events. In addition, we described a recent copy number variant expansion of gene families involving aconitase, ABC transporter, and esterase genes that could be associated with resistance to insecticides and plant chemical defenses. This S. avenae genome obtained from a predominant invasive genotype can provide a framework for studying the spatial-temporal success of these clonal lineages in invaded agroecosystems.

Perceived personal wellbeing tends to be lower in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), especially in the case of women. To develop the present study, the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI-A) was administered to a Spanish-speaking sample of women with ASD (N = 401) and self-diagnosed ASD (N = 343), women without ASD (N = 373) and men with ASD (N = 65) to compare their self-perceptions. Women with ASD showed significantly lower wellbeing rates than women in the control group for the total PWI-A and across all the domains, and there were no significant differences when compared with self-diagnosed women with ASD and men with ASD. Autism explained between 24 and 26% of the decline in the PWI-A total score, with life achievement, future security, safety and relationships being the domains most highly correlated with the total. These findings are an effective contribution to improving diagnosis and professional intervention in women with ASD.

Metabolic scaling, whereby larger individuals use less energy per unit mass than smaller ones, may apply to the combined metabolic rate of group-living organisms as group size increases. Spiders that form groups in high disturbance environments can serve to test the hypothesis that economies of scale benefit social groups. Using solitary and group-living spiders, we tested the hypothesis that spiders exhibit negative allometry between body or colony mass and the standing mass of their webs and whether, and how, such a relationship may contribute to group-living benefits in a cooperative spider. Given the diverse architecture of spider webs-orb, tangle and sheet-and-tangle, and associated differences in silk content, we first assessed how standing web mass scales with spider mass as a function of web architecture and whether investment in silk differs among web types. As group-living spiders are predominantly found in clades that build the presumably costlier sheet-and-tangle webs, we then asked whether cost-sharing through cooperative web maintenance contributes to a positive energy budget in a social species. We found that larger spiders had a relatively smaller investment in silk per unit mass than smaller ones, but more complex sheet-and-tangle webs contained orders of magnitude more silk than simpler orb or tangle ones. In the group-living species, standing web mass per unit spider mass continued to decline as colony size increased with a similar slope as for unitary spiders. When web maintenance activities were considered, colonies also experienced reduced mass-specific energy expenditure with increasing colony size. Activity savings contributed to a net positive energy balance for medium and large colonies after inputs from the cooperative capture of large prey were accounted for. Economies of scale have been previously demonstrated in animal societies characterized by reproductive and worker castes, but not in relatively egalitarian societies as those of social spiders. Our findings illustrate the universality of scaling laws and how economies of scale may transcend hunting strategies and levels of organization.

Human-driven changes in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs are modifying biogeochemical cycles and the trophic state of many habitats worldwide. These alterations are predicted to continue to increase, with the potential for a wide range of impacts on invertebrates, key players in ecosystem-level processes. Here, we present a meta-analysis of 1679 cases from 207 studies reporting the effects of N, P, and combined N + P enrichment on the abundance, biomass, and richness of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Nitrogen and phosphorus additions decreased invertebrate abundance in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with stronger impacts under combined N + P additions. Likewise, N and N + P additions had stronger negative impacts on the abundance of tropical than temperate invertebrates. Overall, the effects of nutrient enrichment did not differ significantly among major invertebrate taxonomic groups, suggesting that changes in biogeochemical cycles are a pervasive threat to invertebrate populations across ecosystems. The effects of N and P additions differed significantly among invertebrate trophic groups but N + P addition had a consistent negative effect on invertebrates. Nutrient additions had weaker or inconclusive impacts on invertebrate biomass and richness, possibly due to the low number of case studies for these community responses. Our findings suggest that N and P enrichment affect invertebrate community structure mainly by decreasing invertebrate abundance, and these effects are dependent on the habitat and trophic identity of the invertebrates. These results highlight the important effects of human-driven nutrient enrichment on ecological systems and suggest a potential driver for the global invertebrate decline documented in recent years.
